Guided Tour

Many people consider themselves technically challenged and are somewhat afraid of doing the wrong thing on the website. Although we encourage everyone to look around and do what you will on the site, there are some that are still not confident and curious enough to venture forth without some prodding. There is nothing you can do that we, the administrators, cannot get you out of. If you attempt to make a Forum post and mess it up, we can tell you how to fix it or we can delete it and you can start over. I am assurred by Mark, that the site is always backed up, and in the very rare event that something caused the site to crash it could be put back in minutes. but we really can't see the prospects of it crashing; I just wanted to reassure everyone.
Remember, the people that succeed the most often, have failed the most also.

Anyways, to get the ball rolling I thought that maybe I would put together a bunch of links on this page, that take you to interesting areas on the website. From here you can click on the links and veiw the page until your heart's content and then hit the back button or follow another active link on that page. Active links are a word or group of words that change color or are underlined when you run your cursor over them. I am not trying to be condescending, but I figure that I am dealing with entry level computer users here. Self guided tours are the only way to go for those of you who dare.

This is a link on the front page and is posted here just as it appears on the front page when you scroll down. I created a few of these active links, because as you look at these opn the front page, you will see that this is way too much information for one page if all of this the info in these links was posted to the front page. How overwhelming would that be? And this organizes it better.

About the Bacon Spencer Family Website
This site was started on August 14, 2006
and is hosted and brought to you by Mark A. Whitney.
We would like to welcome you to our family portal.

You will notice as you run the cursor over "Read More" a line appears under it. This means that it is an active link to another page and if you click on it, it will take you there.

Once you are there, you will notice if you run your cursor over the last words in the first paragraph a line will appear under them. This will take you to a piece of history that is a source of much pride in the family. It is an book created and distributed for the 1915 Reunion. I scanned my original copy and made it available here for everyone. This is truly a great work and significant source of information about the family. I have read it several times and continue to see something new each time I read it. "Sketches" Will open in a new window. If you like you may print it off and keep a hard copy for yourself. I find that it is much easier to read and appreciate that way. Just close the window when you are done. There are several of these links on the front page. You should look at all of them. This is just a push start, though; you will have to go to the front page and click on them for yourself.

Now I would like to show you to the Forums.
You may click this link:
Go to the Forums
Or in the future you go to the Main Menu in the upper right had corner of the screen from most pages of the website: Main Menu>Forums

Here you see the main forum page. It consist of four sections, Help & Information, Conversations, News and Announcements, and the last one is Information. The first three are what you are most concerned with now.

Each section of the forum will have subsections that you may click on to wiew. you will see a brief description of that subsection under the heading for that area. Once you click on a subsection, you will see different threads or topics within that area. Anything that you can see or find an active link to is open to you. If you were to veiw these as rooms, you will not be able to go into any room that you are not supposed to so treat it like a family house and you are just moving in and you have came to look around.

This next item on the Main Menu will get you into the information section of the site.

This is the Main Menu> Family Genealogy-TNG. As you run your cursor across these items sub menus pop up. Some topics have their own sub menus, for instance, to get to Media, this includes: photos, documents, history, videos, recordings, etc. To get to photos you can click on: Family Genealogy>Media>Photos
Or for now you can click on this link:
Photos There are fifty photos on each page. At the top and bottom of the list of photos you will see the Search Reset 1 2 3 4 5 Next>>. Click on the "2" to take you to the second page, and so on. To look closer at a particular photo, you may click on the photo or on the title of the photo. This will open another page and you click on "View this Item" This, in turn, opens a new window with the photo in it. When you are done looking at the photo, then just close the window. You can navigate back through by hitting the "back" button on your browser.
Using this same process you can navigate through all of the media. You will notice the there is a selection, "All Media" at the bottom of the sub menu for Media.

In Main Menu>Other Family Websites, you can go to family member personal or business sites. if you have one that you would like listed here, just let us know. I will let you navigate that by yourself. You should be ready now.
